Tally has served Indian businesses faithfully for decades — but as businesses grow, its limitations become increasingly painful. Limited multi-user access, no integrated inventory management, no CRM, and limited customisation are the most common complaints from Tally users considering a move to Odoo.
At ERP10XIFY, we’ve completed 80+ Tally to Odoo migrations. Here’s everything you need to know.
What Can Be Migrated from Tally to Odoo
The good news is that Tally’s structured data exports make migration relatively straightforward. The following data can typically be migrated:
- Masters: Customers, suppliers, ledgers, products/stock items, price lists
- Opening balances: As of migration date
- Historical transactions: Sales invoices, purchase orders, journal entries (limited by how far back you want to go)
- GST configuration: Tax codes and HSN codes
What Cannot Be Automatically Migrated
- Tally customisations (TDL scripts) — these need to be rebuilt as Odoo modules
- Some Tally-specific journal types that don’t have direct Odoo equivalents
- Complex group ledger structures (require mapping to Odoo chart of accounts)
The ERP10XIFY Tally Migration Process
Our Tally to Odoo migration follows a proven 6-step methodology:
- Data Extraction: Export all masters and transactions from Tally using our custom extraction scripts
- Data Cleansing: Identify and fix duplicate masters, incomplete records, and inconsistencies
- Mapping: Map Tally data structures to Odoo equivalents (chart of accounts, tax codes, stock groups)
- Test Migration: Run a full migration to the staging environment and validate with the client’s finance team
- Parallel Run: Run both Tally and Odoo in parallel for 2–4 weeks to validate figures match
- Cut-Over: Confirm opening balances as of cut-over date and go live on Odoo only
How Long Does It Take?
For a straightforward Tally migration (one company, no complex customisations), the process typically takes 8–12 weeks from kick-off to go-live. Multi-company or highly customised Tally setups may take longer.
